Inspections
ATSBA Canada is
proud to announce that Dr. Tatiana Riabova, main inspector of the
Russian General Studbook, will be visiting Canada to appraise our
horses, for the first time ever, between Monday September 27 and
Friday October 1, 2010.
Dr. Riabova and
Dr. Tito Pontecorvo, accompanied by ATSBA Canada President Cynthia
Swensen, will visit Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia over those
five-scheduled days with the intention of seeing 50-some purebred
Akhal Teke horses as well as a few Sporthorse and Crossbred
individuals.
ATSBA Canada
thanks everyone involved for participating in this inaugural
inspection and grading tour. Should your region or horses be missed
this tour,
please contact us to make arrangements for a future
inspection date.
GUIDELINES FOR GRADING & INSPECTIONS
Horses presented
for inspection must be clean and tidy, but need not be hogged.
Horses may be
presented in halters or bridles. Stallions must be presented in
furnishings that will keep them under control.
Horses will be
measured (height, bone, length and girth). Please do your best to
have your animal(s) sensitized to a measuring stick or tape. This
is in the interests of safety for animals, inspectors, handlers and
spectators.
Handlers need
not be dressed in show clothing but must be dressed neatly and wear
footwear that allow them to run safely alongside the horses when
they are trotting them
out.
2010 Canadian Inspection Tour
Official Results
Numbers 1
through 43 are not indicative of rank. They are merely the order in
which the horses were presented.
All animals are
Pureblood Akhal Tekes unless otherwise indicated.
Sporthorses are
distinguished by 50% or more Akhal Teke blood.
Crossbreds are
50% or less Akhal Teke blood, OR have an unregistered OTHER
parent.
Sporthorses and
Crossbreds, whose other contributing parent was not an Akhal Teke,
were not judged on T-C-M given Dr. Riabova’s lack of familiarity
with breeds other than the Akhal Teke.
The first three
numbers indicate scores for:
Type-Conformation-Movement
Animals are
scored out of a possible 10 points for each of T-C-M.
Foals at foot
are measured on a scale of 5 for no specific attribute other than
over-all impression.
The second four
represent measurements for:
Height- Length-
Girth- Bone
H-L-G-B
measurements are given in cm.
All scores and
measurements are expected to change throughout an animal’s
lifetime- as it grows, matures, changes owners, undergoes training,
has offspring or begets them. Scores and measurements are
indicative of the particular “window in time” in which the horse was
inspected and, over time, can increase or decrease based on Dr.
Riabova’s assessment of the specific animal’s place within the breed
itself. Scores and measurements are assessed without prejudice.

Impression of 2010 Canadian Tour
by Dr. Tatjana Ryabova
I was pleased to
visit the Canadian Akhal Teke breeders for the first time this
September. I would like to share my brief impressions from this
visit. The detailed report will follow later.
Forty-eight
horses were inspected. They were measured, graded, and their
conformation analyzed. Mares, stallions, and young horses of all
ages were brought forward. There were among them, 19 broodmares and
five breeding stallions. There were three weanlings and among them
the best was the black colt from Murgab and the outstanding mare
Dushka. There were three purebred Akhal Teke yearlings, all in fine
condition. Of them, Davinia (Habib x Darginka) was of special
interest. Of the two year olds the most highly graded for type were
the silver buckskin Yupekli (Habib x Akpai) and the golden buckskin
stallion Sammadin (Magnatli x Sakinate).
All of the
horses in Canada are in good shape. The group of mares have nice
type and represent diverse lines, and are in fact even better than
the breeding stallions. I have high hopes for the future produce
from the black Kogan (Karlavach line), who has been shown as a very
strong jumper and who is talented in other classical sports, and
also the buckskin stallion Maruk (Ak Sakal line). For the future it
is essential to find more stallions of bright type and tall stature
to further improve the Canadian stock.
In the practice
of selection there is chosen young horses with high type, exterior
conformation, measurements, movements, and pedigree, a horse of all
around quality, not the same as the champion, for special
recognition. And now I can give this title "Future of The
Breed" to the palomino mare Azeri (Aliger x Gozakhal) and the
buckskin stallion Dazyrdi (Gindarkh x Dinastia).
In the process
of speaking with the owners of Akhal Tekes in Canada we discussed
the various problems of the breed. The seriousness of grading the
horses was explained, the importance of DNA and blood tests, and
keeping records in a closed studbook. We held a master class where
we graded type, exterior conformation, and quality of movement. It
was a pleasure to hear that all Akhal Teke owners are interested to
exhibit their pureblood and halfblooded (sporthorse) horses in
sporting competitions in order to promote the breed. This factor is
very important in raising the quality of the horses and introducing
them to the rest of the horse world in the best way.
In conclusion of
my short summary of our trip, I would like thank Cynthia Swensen for
organizing this trip in such a gracious manner. Tito Pontecorvo and
I were only able to spend a week observing all the horses of
Canada's large territory, including British Columbia, Ontario, and
Alberta. My great impression of this trip was not only of beautiful
landscapes and the well-organized tour, but friendly people who are
willing to work hard, and devoted to the breed. It was a beautiful
golden autumn with warm weather and unforgettable drive through the
Rocky Mountains with Cynthia Swensen. I have high hopes of good
results in the future, working with the Canadian Akhal Teke breeders
and owners.
